Last Friday, professor Carme Miralles-Guasch participated in the Plaça oberta program of betevé, presented by Bernat Martínez, in a debate focused on a key issue for the future of cities: what the role of the private vehicle should be in urban environments.
During the program, different voices of experts in mobility and urban planning shared diverse perspectives on the current challenges of urban mobility. Among the outstanding ideas, it was noted that the car continues to play a relevant role in the metropolitan area, especially in contexts where alternative transportation options do not yet offer sufficient reliability or coverage.
However, it was also highlighted that within the city, mobility patterns are clearly different, with a majority of travel on foot. This fact reinforces the need to rethink public space in order to prioritize people and promote more sustainable and inclusive forms of mobility.
The debate highlighted the importance of opening spaces for dialogue between academic research, public policy formulation and citizens, with the aim of moving towards more balanced urban models.
